Item Description
Up for your consideration is an absolutely gorgeous and rare antique Collars and Cuffs Dresser Box, circa 1880-1890, off white in color with hues of baby blue around the top rim of the lid and bottom and sides of the piece. This piece is a very large box at 5 1/5" tall and 6.75" wide. Truly a showcase piece that would take center stage in any collection.
The top of the lid is decorated with hand painted pink flowers adorned with a beautiful raised tapestry of pearlescent scalloping and embellishment. The gold hinge is tight and in excellent condition. The latch opens & closes properly. The fabric inside, the top of the box only, is original and in good condition with a tear/wear from the deterioration of the fabric over time. There are no chips, cracks, or other damage noted.
When these boxes were made in 1880-1890 clothing was all handmade.  Men wore undershirts which would protect their dress shirts from use, but the collar and the cuff area took the most abuse and would wear out the fastest.  So to save money, shirts without collars and cuffs were made and the collars and cuffs were bought separately. That way the shirts could be washed by themselves and the cuffs and collars would be stored in the boxes until their use. Once factories started making shirts, clothing became cheaper, and there was no need to have separate collars and cuffs, or a place to store them.  Therefore, these beautiful pieces were no longer needed starting in the 1930's. These pieces are a beautiful way to buy back a little piece of American history.
