The Žandarmerija (Serbian Cyrillic: Жандармерија) is the gendarmery of Serbia. Dissolved at the end of WWII, it was reestablished on 28 June 2001, by the Interior Minister Dušan Mihailović. The Special Operations Unit (JSO) and Special Police Unit (PJP) were later attached to the Gendarmery. The gendarmery's duties are both civilian and military. The Serbian gendarmery consists of 4 battalion sized units. Each battalion has between 700 - 800 policemen. The principal bases are located in Belgrade, Niš, Kraljevo and Novi Sad. Its duties include: to provide security and public peace, to investigate and prevent organized crime, terrorism and other violent groups; to protect state and private property; repressing riots in prisons, counter terrorism, restoring peace and stability if they have been heavily disturbed, countering violent groups to assist other security forces in case of emergency, civil unrest, war; to repress riots; to reinforce martial law and mobilization; to fight and apprehend suspected criminals etc. The Žandarmerija uses special combat uniforms depending on situation and operational setting, is equipped with various camouflages. It also has its own traditional, dark blue with red trim and collar tabs, ceremonial uniforms for special events.
