The leader of a raid or war party became known as the pipe holder, or the one who carried the sacred pipe. In this painting, Chuck is portraying a war party coming into another tribe's land. Chuck is not being specific about the objective of this particular scene--whether it's a horse raid or a fight.   The pipe carrier is in the buffalo headdress, with the pipe in the crook of his left arm.
About the Artist:  Chuck DeHaan is a true western artist especially noted for his outstanding treatment of horses.  Raised in the Southwest, he has lived in California, Arizona and Texas.  Chuck owns and operates the Cow-Track ranch in Palo Pinto County, where he trains cutting horses.  A former cowboy and rodeo rider, DeHaan has painted all his life.  His paintings have appeared on the covers of such magazines as The Paint Horse Journal, The Quarter Horse Journal, and The Cattleman, and in the ads for Justin Boot Co., Ryan Saddle and Ranch Supply, and Potts Longhorn Leather Company.  His work has been shown in Sedona, Scottsdale, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Phoenix, Dallas, Ft. Worth, San Diego, Des Moines and Milwaukee.  Most of his work has been for private collections so that the public has had little opportunity to know this artist or to see his work
